Algae Resistant Shingles Designed to Prevent Black Streaks
PABCO® Roofing Products is proud to produce our premium asphalt shingles featuring Algae Defender™ with the best algae resistance warranty in the business. Many areas of the United States are susceptible to black streaks on rooftops caused by algae.
PABCO® shingles and accessories featuring Algae Defender are made to the highest-quality standards to prevent black streaks caused by algae from forming on your roof. “We have a precise target blend of copper containing granules in the manufacturing process and our results are closely monitored during every production run,” explains Rebecca Newman, Plant Operations Manager, “When moisture contacts your Algae Defender protected roof in the form of dew or rain, copper ions are gradually released over time to provide reliable protection from black streaks caused by blue-green algae.”

To combat the problem of black streaks, we use 3M™ Copper Granules. These granules, which blend inconspicuously into the shingle’s color, are uniformly distributed on the shingle’s surface, and release copper ions which help inhibit the growth of blue-green algae, preventing it from getting started in the first place.*
For maximum algae protection, our shingles featuring Scotchgard™ Protector utilize at least a 10% blend of 3M™ Copper Granules.
Malarkey was the first shingle manufacturer to receive the Scotchgard™ Protector designation from 3M.

Dew on roofs, combined with humidity and sunlight exposure, creates the perfect environment for the growth of blue-green algae which, on a roof, can cause unsightly staining in the form of black streaks.
In very humid environments, these streaks can manifest in as few as 3 years after installation, and they only get worse with time.
